This May 8 is Mother’s Day, a day dedicated to the women who give us their selfless love and support. Whether it’s your mom, or mother-life figures in your life, we all want to show our gratitude for the women who have dedicated a large part of their lives in nurturing us and making us better humans.
In the Philippines, we have traditionally celebrated Mother’s Day on the first Monday of December since the 1920s. But during President Cory Aquino’s term, it was amended through a Proclamation stating that Mother’s Day should be celebrated on the first Sunday of May. In Filipino culture, mothers have such a large place and emphasis in our lives. Moms are often referred to as “ilaw ng tahana,” which translates to “the light of the home” due to the love, cheer, and brightness they bring to the family.
So here’s to all the mothers, titas, and lolas, who have made such a difference in our lives! Happy Mother’s Day!
